Eddys in the Lovecraftian Continuum

This is a beautifully-bound hardback collection of notes regarding Lovecraft, as preserved by two people from Providence who knew him well, the Eddys. Much of the contents are fascinating on several levels, from providing insight into Lovecraft the man and author, through to how the imprecision of memory and storytelling embellishment of genuine events, can alter how those events are recalled at different times later. The final, lengthy, essay on Lovecraft’s mention of a “Dark Swamp” in northwestern Rhode Island in two letters, and its subsequent reinterpretation and over-elaboration by the recent Internet generation, provides a case-study of one such shifting pattern of perceptions in a manner that Lovecraft might have deemed laughable. The book is somewhat troubled by too-frequent typographical errors, especially in the extensive “Correspondence” chapter, and some of the facsimile document images are insufficiently legible, unfortunate in such an otherwise quality presentation. Despite these issues, this is a valuable work for serious Lovecraft enthusiasts wishing to delve beyond his stories, although those without prior knowledge may wish it had more annotations for better clarity. Such folk may find listening to the substantial series of “Voluminous” podcasts, available for download from the main HPLHS website, will assist with some of these aspects, however. This is overall a fine addition to the background information about Lovecraft currently available in print.

The Gentleman from Angell Street

A beautiful book with much interesting content. On p. 2 I think the photo of Susie Phillips is a very early one--ca. 1875-80. I wonder if the adult male pictured on the same page is really her husband Winfield S. Lovecraft. Winfield (d. 1898) was committed to Butler Hospital in 1893, before his 40th birthday. The picture looks like a man at least that old.

A Labor of Love

was pleasantly surprised by how professionally the book presents and the amount of details. If you enjoy HPLC as much as I do, then this work of art belongs in your collection, right next to your Necronomicon!
