"Even from the greatest of horrors irony is seldom absent. "

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® presents H.P. Lovecraft's tale of a house with a horrifying history in his hometown of Providence. The story bounds to life with a cast of professional actors, thrilling sound effects and an original orchestral score by Troy Sterling Nies. Click here for more information about our other Lovecraft stories in the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® series. They're like movies you can enjoy with your eyes closed.

On picturesque College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, an old colonial house has sat empty for decades. No one would consider renting the house with its long history of woes and unexplained deaths. Can a young man and his elderly great-uncle get to the bottom of the unspeakable causes of the house's affliction? Or will their investigation bring them face to face with an enduring evil?

The CD edition will feature the 75 minute audio show plus a collection of props to enhance your listening experience. The props are still in development, and we will provide more details once we finalize them, but you can expect something like the following:

  • a newspaper clipping about the death of a beloved figure
  • a large annotated vintage map of Providence, Rhode Island
  • a letter explaining the conclusions of an expert
  • a page with details about some special equipment
  • plus, for you pre-order customers, a fifth bonus item!
All of these great extras will be complemented by the fantastic artwork of illustrator Darrell Tutchton in the style you've come to know and love from other episodes of Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®Everything else you ever wanted to know about Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® is right here.

Fun Mystery

Loved the way the story was told from the narrator and presented as a mystery and turned into an investigation as to what became of the great Uncle Whipple. 1920's shock therapy gave me a chuckle as the nephew is questioned with regards to the events that took place at the house with the dubious reputation. As always the cast and crew gave a wonderful performance with the music and sound effects lending to the eeriness of the story. Highly recommend.

Another solid adaptation of an original HPL tale

The Shunned House while not one of HPL's top-tier stories is a neat little tale of horror based on the concept of what Stephen King would call 'The Bad Place'. In their continuing series of audio drama adaptations, the DART team have done a solid job of adapting this story. They set HPL's plot of how the narrator and his uncle grapple with the horrors of the titular house within the context of an investigation into uncle's disappearance, and this involves electro-shock therapy and hypnotism; good, clean fun.
I feel they could have done a little more in terms of bombastic sound effects for the action that happens within the shunned house, given more pizzazz to the battle with the yellow phosphorescent fug. That apart, I have no complaints. This is another solidly written and performed adventure, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Pull up a chair and enjoy

There's nothing better than to prepare your favorite beverage, gather your props and listen to a Dark Adventure. This one is no exception. Set to the high standards of all of the Dark Adventure Radio Theater productions, this is a wonderfully immersive and chilling radio drama, perfect for listening to on a dark and stormy night with the rain pattering on your window and the skeletal trees scratching the glass. Or on a sunny afternoon. And as usual, the props are top-notch, bringing you deeper into the drama. Good job HPLHS - I cannot wait for the next one!

Another great radio drama from DART

I just listened to the latest CD radio drama of DART "The Shunned House" and I am glad to confirm that it is in the line of all the other amazing production from HPLHS. Wonderful props, deluxe presentation and, what's more, an impeccable and emotional rendering of one of Lovecraft's best stories. Spot on, as always!
