Lovecraft's Hand-Written Manuscript

The French Publisher Editions des Saints Péres recently released an extraordinary edition of Lovecraft's master work, "At the Mountains of Madness". This large format, hardbound, slipcase edition is a facsimile reproduction of HPL's original handwritten manuscript for the story. Scanned from the original documents at the John Hay Library at Brown University, the manuscript is now presented at full size in book form. You'll see what he crossed out, what he added in, and what he wrote on (this edition reproduces the reverse side of the pages, most of which are letters HPL had received from his friends).

This edition is beautifully produced and is limited to 1,000 numbered copies. It's 192 pages, printed on Fedrigoni paper with a built-in book mark. The large format (35 x 25 cm) is handy for deciphering HPL's handwriting. This edition features an introduction by the celebrated Lovecraft scholar, S.T. Joshi and a Preface by French translator and Lovecraft expert David Camus. While this edition is from a French publisher, all of the text is in English.

Honestly we're pretty unimpressed by many new editions of HPL's works we see being put out these days. This, however, is a work of art and a great acquisition for any serious collector. It's a wonderful (and beautiful) addition to our library here at the HPLHS.

We received an advance copy from the publisher and more are en route to us from France. We anticipate having them in stock and ready to ship to customers by June 15.

Upside-Down Pages

This a beautifully published volume, with a version of At the Mountains of Madness "corrected" better than S. T. Joshi possibly could do! This meticulous facsimile has the curious inclusion of random correspondence -- much of which is printed upside-down! This is not an error. HPL wrote his manuscripts on the back of used paper out of a sense of frugality.

Enjoy this volume!

Exquisite production! Everything about this is just gorgeous.

Exquisite production! The cover, binding, paper, print, everything about this is just gorgeous. The manuscript itself is really a chaotic reflection of madness, honestly. The handwriting is not easy to decipher, and it's all over the place. It's quite amazing to look over it and think that an actual coherent book came out of this. It's even more interesting to go over the memos, letters and various correspondence that are on the backside of each page of the manuscript. The whole thing is just quite fascinating.
