Writer Randolph Carter moves into a rundown tenement in the sweltering hot summer of 1923. After being revived from a near-fatal heart attack, he becomes friends with the mysterious Dr. Muñoz (Jack Donner, Star Trek) who saved his life and learns the awful secret of why the doctor never leaves the chilly confines of his freezeing parlor.

DVD includes both the original black and white release and the tinted duo-chrome. Includes behind-the-scenes interviews with director Bryan Moore, cinematographer Michael Bartowski and editor Sam Oldham.

A Chilling Experience

As Cool Air has become one of my favorite of HPL's stories, I found it hard to resist not picking this movie up. Now having watched it, I can say I'm not disappointed by it. The film is a wonderful moody and atmospheric take on the tale which reminded me of better moments from the Universal Monster Movies, with some great performances especially by the late Jack Donner as Dr. Munoz. It stays fairly faithful to the story with only slight changes to add more depth to the characters and the film only lasts a little under 45 minutes. I recommend checking it out if you enjoy the story and would like to see another take on it. I'm also looking forward to Bryan Moore's future film stints into the world of Lovecraft.

Chill out, dude!

Before I found the HPLHS, I saw Bryan Moore's "Cool Air" on an old DVD called The HP Lovecraft Collection, and at that time, I felt it was the best and most true HPL adaptation ever put on film. The HPLHS has managed to surpass it in my mind, but that does nothing to take away from Moore's film.
Here it's available in both its B/W original form, as well as a tinted version which looks absolutely stunning, and complimented by a lot of extras, and a new and stylish cover artwork. A must-see for any fan of film and HPL.

One of my Favorites

Bryan Moore's Cool Air has always been one of my favorite cinematic adaptations of Lovecraft, and this new DVD really does it justice. I am happy to have the duotone version as an alternative, but for me the black and white is the way to go.

Chill

When I took the DVD of "Cool Air" out of my cool postbox into my warm home, I suddenly became aware of a strange smell. After checking the usual sources including my feet, I had to accept the fact that it was emitted by the DVD. The DVD and the box had become strangely soft and even near to liquid in parts. So I took this "thing" and put it into my fridge. Soon it became a normal DVD again; but there are still some problems when I want to watch the film! Now I will purchase a small frdge to put the player in...

A Good Effort at Telling a Simple Story

This is an enjoyable diversion, a short film clearly a passion-production in an attempt to create something true to Lovecraft as best as one can, on a very limited budget, and still tell a visual story. Be warned, it is NOT up to the level of Whisperer in the Darkness.

It was a labor of love for many involved. It was the dream of Bryan Moore, who wrote, directed and starred as Randolph Carter. Jack Donner, a character actor, played Dr. Muñoz with true skill.

In one monologue added to the film by Moore to give some backstory to Dr. Muñoz, Donner showed his true talent as an actor, not at all strained, and full of raw emotion.

While the “duo-chrome” release does give the viewer some idea of the “feel” of each scene, in the end, it’s obtrusive in my opinion, with most of the scenes in sepia, the cold-room scenes in blue, and other varieties. It honestly felt unnecessary.

It’s probably not something I’ll watch again with any regularity, but, again, I do appreciate the effort to bring it to life. There is even a teaser-trailer for another hoped-for production for Shadow Over Innsmouth, and the brief glances we get of that special Innsmouth look makes one really want to see if he can bring that movie to life. The teaser trailer is also available on YouTube, if you want to have a look.

All in all, it’s not the best Lovecraft adaptation, but it is certainly better than most and is something to be appreciated for the care and determination the cast and crew put into it.
