The Whipple Edition

The HPLHS partnered again with our friends at Helios House to present the most extraordinary and comprehensive edition of HPL's tale of a lingering horror in Providence: "The Shunned House".  In celebration of the story's 100th anniversary, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and Helios House Press are delighted to present an ultra-deluxe edition of the work. This boxed set represents a beautiful homage to an important historical, could-have-been edition of the story.

This exquisite three-volume slipcase edition features:

  • A typographical replica of the original, uncut sheets for "The Shunned House" (as printed by W. Paul Cook's Recluse Press) printed on luxurious laid paper and housed in a custom special presentation case comprised of a tri-fold inner folder nested inside a clamshell box

  • A second clamshell box holding a pamphlet-bound reading copy of "The Shunned House" in the style of the popular Miskatonic Literary Society editions, along with a number of delectable extra goodies

  • A hardcover volume entitled Night-Black Deeds, a centenary edition of "The Shunned House" annotated by Sean Branney & Andrew Leman of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and Dr. N.R. Jenzen-Jones of Helios House Press, plus original commentary reflecting on the tale prepared by leading Lovecraftian scholars.

Both boxes and the hardcover volume are presented in vibrant red bookcloth with gold foil and leather spine labels, and are nestled inside a purple bookcloth slipcase with gold foil accents. The pamphlet-bound booklet is printed on premium paper with letterpress details on the covers.

A comprehensive study of Lovecraft's haunted house

While waiting for my copy to be delivered, I stumbled across a vimeo unboxing of (as I understand what I watched) an original set of uncut pages of 'The Shunned House'. I'm glad that I found that, as it appears to have been the inspiration for the clam shell presentation of this 'Whipple' edition.

Slightly larger than the Miskatonic Missives box, the quality of the production feels slightly higher and the contents more curated to the topic at hand. Here, the slipcase and both clamshell boxes feel like they've been finished with the same durable bookcloth as 'Night-Black Deeds', the hardcover study of 'The Shunned House'. For comparison, 'Night-Black Deeds' feels similar to the volumes in the Miskatonic Missives set, while the included reader (Roulet) edition of 'The Shunned House' is a similar production to the Literary Society books.

I'm very pleased to have this in my bookcase, and I look forward to immersing myself in the story and the supporting essays.

The Fungi From Providence

Three versions of the same Lovecraft tale in one set might seem like overkill, even in such a beautiful HPLHS-Helios House production. Each here though is unique. The first clamshell box holds the replica uncut printed sheets, difficult to read, but looking almost exactly like the ones Lovecraft himself saw and handled. Except these are on much better-quality paper, if sadly without the original embedded watermark. That watermark is shown though, with an added note thanking the Kickstarter backers, on the former copyright page. Clamshell box two has the modernly-reset, booklet-bound, version of the tale in an easily readable form, with an impressive Hester Aspland illustration of the eponymous House, and separate goodies - the acrostic poems booklet, bookmark, fungus-and-Indian-Pipes-illustrated bookplate, certificate of authenticity (41 here!), and the Providence Pack. Look out too for the full colour picture of the Whipples in the fungous cellar, with Crookes tube, flamethrower and flashlights, in the box’s base. Finally, we have the annotated version of the story in “Night-Black Deeds”, the deceptively slim volume that rounds off the whole. The essays, images and notes in this add yet more to the tale, its background and the influence of Lovecraft’s view of Providence, including a reduced-size image of the Benefit Street area map from the Providence Pack as its frontispiece. As an early backer of the Kickstarter, I am, of course, biased, but this is a truly wonderful set.

An amazing product and fantastic service

The box set is absolutely wonderful, a real work of art. I couldn’t be more happy. And, when there was a problem with my original copy, Sean Branney of the HPLHS and NR Jenzen-Jones of Helios House responded so very quickly and rectified the problem promptly. A true benefit of dealing with smaller, passionate companies who want their products to be the best they can be.

Thank you.
