Written in 1926, just before the advent of "talking" pictures, The Call of Cthulhu is one of the most famous and influential tales of H.P. Lovecraft, the father of gothic horror. Now the story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score. Using the Mythoscope™ process — a mix of modern and vintage techniques, the HPLHS has worked to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted.

From the cultists of the Louisana bayous to the man-eating non-euclidean geometry of R'lyeh, the HPLHS brings Cthulhu to the screen as it was meant to be seen. Eighteen months of production and a cast of more than 50 actors went into making this film a period spectacle that must seen to be believed.

The DVD includes The Call of Cthulhu (47 minutes, black and white), the high-fidelity and "Mythophonic" soundtracks, a 25 minute "making-of" documentary featurette, two slide shows, deleted footage, a prop PDF of the Sydney Bulletin and more.

To appeal to Lovecraft fans throughout across the globe, this DVD provides intertitles in 24 languages including: Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Euskera, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, Luxmbourgish, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Welsh. These aren't just subtitles either — they are the real title cards rendered tastefully in each language. If you thought the story was scary before, wait until you see it in Welsh!

It's won awards at film festivals around the world and garnered great critical acclaim. Still not convinced?  Need more than just the movie?

Format: NTSC, Region 0 (region free), Black & White (special features in color with sound). This movie was made in Standard Definition. This is no Bluray or HD version available.

But if you just want to stream the movie, you're in luck, as it's now streaming on Tubi.

H.P. Lovecraft would be proud!

I'm not usually a big fan of the silent movie format, but this was perfect for the source material. I was genuinely enthralled throughout the entire movie. Well done!

Extremely well done

Excellent rendition of the quintessential Lovecraft story. The acting is surprisingly good, the cinematography is fabulous, the music is exceptional, the narrative stays true to the story, and the great Harryhausen himself couldn’t have done a better job with the stop motion and models. I love that this was done as a silent film, it really adds to the whole atmosphere of the story. My only wish is that this, along with The Whisperer in the Dark, could get to a wider audience - these are films that need to be seen.

Scary quality

First saw this 14 years ago when a friend showed it to me while I was helping them move. I loved the film and it (eventually) got me into the works of HP Lovecraft. Amazing adaptation of Lovecraft’s most well known story done by people who know and love the material (unlike most Hollywood adaptations these days).

Fantastic Film!

A wonderful and true to form adaptation of the story. The talent and creativity of the cast and crew really shines, especially when you watch the special features and see all the lengths they went to for the filming. As a big fan of stop motion I most enjoyed the model sets and creature work, but all the special effects and attention to detail felt lovingly crafted. All supported by an incredible score. Overall a great buy for fans of Lovecraft and/or silent films!

Nearly Perfect!

A fantastic film adaptation of the book! With very enjoyable behind the scenes featurettes. My singular complaint is that I wish the filmmakers had placed a noisier film grain over the image to make it feel more like a 1920s vintage film. The sharpness of the image is the only giveaway that it's not actually of the period. Otherwise, a brilliant production all around!
