Dark Adventure Goes Interactive

Brace yourself for an all new DARK ADVENTURE. Join our special guest host Calvin Kirklee (voiced by Nick Offerman) as you choose your own adventure in this epic interactive story. You make the choices, and you suffer the consequences or succeed magnificently. It's all up to you. This dramatic interactive adventure features a large cast of actors, thrilling sound effects, and an original orchestral score.

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: Purgatory Chasm can be played interactively through any web browser, on your phone, tablet, or via desktop computer. No microphone? No problem: you can also interact via clickable buttons.

Join Professor Nathaniel Ward and his colleague Charlie Tower as they investigate a mysterious cave in Massachusetts. Depending on the choices you make, several different stories may unfold, with outcomes including death, madness, and — quite possibly — triumph. Purgatory Chasm contains more than six hours of interactive audio adventuring. And if your adventure ends in cosmic horror, no problem, just try again!

If you'd like to experience Purgatory Chasm via your phone while on the move, we recommend the app version. To get it, download the free Twist Tales app. Launch the app and purchase Purgatory Chasm inside the app. To learn more about the episode, click here!

Extra Note: Purgatory Chasm is a little different than other Dark Adventure shows. Due to its interactivity, it is an experience you play rather than an audio file you purchase and download.  As always, we stand behind the quality and availability of your audio experience. If, for any reason, the experience becomes unavailable within two (2) years of purchase, you are entitled to a full refund. To initiate a refund, simply provide proof of purchase and contact our support team. This warranty applies regardless of the cause of unavailability and ensures your complete satisfaction and peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: So, does this come on CD? Is it a download? How does it work?

A: Purgatory Chasm does not come on CD and is not a download. Due to its interactive nature, it's played on a web browser. Once you've purchased it, we'll send you a link to the page where you can play it. You'll need internet access while playing Purgatory Chasm, and you should keep the browser window open while it is playing in order to keep your place in the complex story.

Q: Wait, Nick Offerman is really the host of this Dark Adventure?

A: He really is. Nick is an old friend of ours and we were delighted we could bring him aboard to host this show.

Q: So how does the interactivity work?

A: Every few minutes, the host will ask you to make a decision about what happens next. You can either speak your answer or click buttons on your screen to respond. The story will unfold based on what YOU decide to do. There are three main stories, and lots and lots of different outcomes based on the choices you make.

Q: If I play through one story, can I go back and play the other ones?

A: You sure can. Some choices you might make can lead to unsuccessful outcomes. But you'll have opportunities to go back and try a different choice. Or you can start over. There are lots of ways to play Purgatory Chasm.

Q: How is the app version different than the web version?

A: In testing, we found that web browsers on mobile devices generally don't like to stay open and on for extended periods of time. The Twist Tales app avoids this issue as the app is happy to stay on for as long as you need it. It's made by our partners at EarReality who created the software that makes Purgatory Chasm work. The content of the app is the exact same as the content of the browser version, but if you want to play while driving in your car, the app version works better.

Q: Does this Dark Adventure episode come with the customary prop documents?

A: Because it's not a download or standard CD release, this episode doesn't have any props to go with it. But who knows what the future might bring? We do love to make props....

Q: If I buy the HTML version and then later decide I want the app version, can I get that for free?

A: Sorry, no. The products are sold by different companies and getting one does not entitle you to the other.

So cool

I was a bit daunted at first by the thought of all those possibilities, but this turned out to be soooo much fun! And any production where there's singing* from Andrew and Sean (and that lovely actress, I can't think of her name) gets quadruple bonus points from me! I hope there's more like it in the future, at least song-wise. That might just be my music major bias though, lol.
Thanks everyone who put their heart and soul into this thing!
[*I mean I assume Sean and the lady sing, but I've only played through the Wawatseka timeline once so far. So much to do!!!]

More fun than barrel of brain cylinders

Who would have thought making Charlie and Nate make bad choices could be so much fun! Finally, a worthwhile use for my phone!

Something different but...

I have all the DART episodes. I enjoy listening them while driving or doing chores. The interactive episode doesn't lend itself as well to just passive enjoyment. I also don't see myself keeping track of all my decisions and listening over and over, trying all the possibilities.

Purgatory Chasm's really not meant for passive enjoyment. If you're not up for engaging with the story and deciding what happens next, this really isn't the show for you. But hey, we have lots of traditional Dark Adveture shows ready and waiting.

An Astounding Choose Your Own Adventure!

It is rare to have a feeling of child like thrill in adulthood but somehow the HPLHS team has done it with this Lovecraft inspired audio drama, as a kid I always loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books and I never thought the page turning wallop could be replicated for adults until Black Mirror's Bandersnatch and now for audio listeners Dark Adventure's Purgatory Chasm. I was on the edge of my seat listening to this audio drama with each choice weighing heavy as you wonder whether you picked the right option or doomed the heroes to an early grave. It was nice to see the charming Charlie Tower and friends again especially after the fantastic Brotherhood of the Beast which had it's own choose your own ending option in it's final chapter. I do hope HPLHS does more with the CYOA model in the future as well as more pulp style adventure with Tower and co.
