"Had my body been the vehicle of an alien consciousness from palaeogean gulfs of time?"

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®: The Shadow Out of Time brings Lovecraft's tale to life as it might have been adapted for radio in the 1930s. In the style of The War of the Worlds, The Shadow and other classic vintage radio shows, Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® dramatizes HPL's story with a huge cast of professional actors, exciting sound effects and thrilling original music by Troy Sterling Nies (composer for The Call of Cthulhu). Journey across the globe and through strange aeons with Lovecraft's last major story: The Shadow Out of Time.

In addition to the full 77 minute radio drama on CD, you'll get these carefully made props from the story to enhance your listening experience:

• A clipping from a 1908 copy of the Arkham Advertiser describing Professor Peaslee's collapse during a lecture at Miskatonic

• An article from the British Medical Journal describing Peaslee's amnesia and strange dreams, including a sketch of the Great Race's architecture

• An urgent ship-to-shore Marconigram sent to Peaselee aboard the HMS Empress

• A page from Von Junzt's Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten revealing secrets of Yithian technology with Peaselee's hieroglyphic annotations

And of course it's beautifully produced and packaged with the same deranged attention to detail that you'll find in other HPLHS products. The CD edition includes a free digital download of the show.

The cover art by Darrell Tutchton is available on garments and other fun items from our Redbubble store!

Or Download Now. You can skip the props and CD, and download a high-quality MP3 of the show right now and be enjoying it in just a few minutes. It's available as a single audio file or a collection of multiple chapter files. It's eco-friendly, with no shipping or tax charges!

Everything in Australia wants to kill you

The episode follows the original story really well. I love how the HPLHS adds conversation to characters that were silent. Super fun, great props!

The adaptation of this story was well done

Liked the depiction of the characters and soundtrack. This adaptation added a lot of depth to the story and the characters were well portrayed.

TIMELY SHUDDERS

Never ones to shy from a challenge, the HPLHS’ DART team here present a lively adaptation of one of Lovecraft’s longer tales, whose original was almost all straightforward narration. Naturally, changes were made, though none of those detract from the presentation, and indeed elements such as giving Professor Dyer a little more to do than Lovecraft allowed, seem a distinct improvement on the story in places. That story to me always struggled in the shadow of being a loose reprise-variant of “At the Mountains of Madness”, with which it shares perhaps too much, besides the presence of Prof. Dyer. This DART adaptation makes “The Shadow Out of Time” more distinctive, even if occasional segments of the exposition remain too much like narration. While the period props, as always, add to the overall experience of the audio production, and are excellently prepared, the Marconigram might have been better replaced by a period map of NW Australia for help in orientation. The page from Von Juntz’s treatise in black-letter German helpfully has two English versions available for free download on the HPLHS website, albeit neither translates the handwritten additions in German, unfortunately. Peaslee’s sketch of the Great Ones’ city from the BMJ, while illustrating the difficulties in Lovecraft’s choice of curved stones to construct it, should have had rounded windows, not squared ones. These though are quite minor concerns, more than compensated by the general excellence of the audio.

I couldn't be more pleased!

I bought The Shadow Out Of Time - (DART version) a week or two ago.
This was my very first DART purchase.
I have to say, I was stunned by how compelling it was!
I found this more enjoyable than I would imagine a motion picture version of it would be.
Although I have enjoyed reading Lovecraft for many years, I found the radio show performance to be completely captivating.
The Props make the purchase even more enjoyable.
I placed another order for two more titles yesterday. I can't wait to listen to them!
