If you are here you are probably a Lovecraft nerd, so the question remains, how big a nerd do you want to be? His relationship with Sonia, their interesting courtship and ill-fated marriage, is one of the great Lovecraft mysteries, complete with deliberately destroyed evidences and a conspiracy of silence. Finally we have a new glimpse into this tantalising area of Lovecraft's most personal life. Wasserman's approach, blending different sources in the text is an excellent means to keep the flow of the narrative, with an inspired choice to colour-code the sources to give perspective without interruption. Lovecraft, as he does with almost all his friends and acquaintances, overshadows whenever he appears but Wasserman keeps the focus and interest in Sonia alive and vibrant in her own right. The extensive timeline, notes, and profuse images keep the work from being over dry or annoyingly obtuse. I'm a Lovecraft guy and I had never seen many of these pictures in print before. It's a Helios House production, and as such is a beautiful work in it own right. I strongly advise going the whole hog and getting the slipcase edition, for both protection and aesthetic. Highly recommended.
