"She hasn't done anything drastic yet, Dan, but she might. I mean she could. She will."

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®: The Thing on the Doorstep adapts H.P. Lovecraft's tale of occult powers and domestic horrors in a 1930s-style radio drama. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® presents the tale with a huge cast of professional actors, exciting sound effects and thrilling original music by Troy Sterling Nies. Click here for more information about our other Lovecraft stories in the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® series. They're like movies you can enjoy with your eyes closed.

Daniel Upton stands charged with the brutal murder of his best friend, Edward Derby. Was the crime an act of greed, jealousy, or madness? Or did Edward's wife, the mysterious Asenath Waite, put to use her rumored occult powers? Was it a crime carried out by a ruthless fiend, or was the killer the next victim of a supreme evil that lurks unseen among us?

The CD edition feature the 75 minute (estimated) audio show plus a collection of props to enhance your listening experience. They include:

  • the Arkham Advertiser society column article announcing the betrothal of Edward Derby to Asenath Waite
  • an Arkham Sanitarium intake assessment form for patient Edward Derby
  • a strange and terrible note of explanation given by a late-night visitor
  • a disturbing photograph by the Essex County Medical Examiner

All of these great extras are complemented by the fantastic artwork of illustrator Darrell Tutchton in the style you've come to know and love from other episodes of Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®. The CD edition includes a free digital download of the show.

The cover art is available on t-shirts and other garments, plus posters, stickers and more in our Redbubble store!

DART is GOAT

Enjoying everyone of these so far, and my collection is growing quickly. Acting is fantastic, writing is excellent, atmosphere is spot on. Another smash hit!

Enjoyed this adaptation

This had the feel of the original story, but his version adds depth to the story. The voice performances add drama and atmosphere to this adaptation. The music and sound effects also add much to this and I really enjoyed this.

Freaky Friday, but horrific.

Holy goodness the HPLHS does it again. Another great adaptation of Lovecraft with amazing props.

PLAYTIME IN THE SHOGGOTH PIT

Lovecraft’s original tale always felt a little unusual to me, more visceral in its horrors than many others, aside from having more defined characters than most, including one of the leads as strong and, at least nominally, female. While that may have made for an easier DART adaptation than some of the stories, more has been added here to help tease-out the details further, without resorting to the printed work’s narration. There are the expected touches of, often dark, humour, fine performances, and music and sound effects that never fail to enhance the whole in any DART production, while the physical props with the CD version add their own fresh level of immersion - even if that note from the pencil-point is in strikingly better condition than might have been expected (and, perhaps happily, scent-free). I may not have been the greatest fan of the published “Thing on the Doorstep”. This DART version is a whole different matter, and all the better for that.

Another cracking production from HPLHS

I can't recommend the Dark Adventure Radio Theatre series enough, they are superbly realised, acted and produced. I have many of them and Love them all. The Thing on the Doorstep was no exception.
